Heavenly Littleton - Oral Histories

“Family, Church, and Farmin’ – Living Off the Land in Lumpkin County” is an exhibition of black and white portraits of Lumpkin County residents by Dahlonega photographer Bard Wrisley. The show is presented in conjunction with the Smithsonian’s Key Ingredients: America by Food, hosted by North Georgia College and State University's Appalachian Studies Center.
Bard notes, "My dream of photographing Lumpkin County residents became a reality with a call from Heavenly Littleton who was working on the local component of Key Ingredients.” Documentarian and producer Littleton interviewed the people photographed, and their stories are available for visitors to hear as they view the portraits. Bard added, “It was a perfect match. The beauty of this is the oral histories that come along with the photographs.”
He describes his approach by noting, “The subjects have been photographed in a way that illustrates them as simply as possible. I chose this approach because I felt that the subject was ‘it.’ I wanted no distractions with any environment, choosing to focus on the expression and body language that each subject lives.”
The portraits and oral stories illustrate the importance of relationships in growing, preparing and sharing food. Bard added, “We all know that relationships in this life are what make it all worthwhile. One of the things that stood out during the project was how people share. Listening to the old timers, it came up frequently that daddy butchered hogs and gave them away to his family and friends. People just looked out for those around them. Because we are so mobile, we tend to do just that… be mobile. We don’t have time to make jams and jellies to take down the road. Our approach now is to write a check to charity. This is still good. We just miss the relationships that are built by going down the road.”
